Dear Ones,

People ask me what this poem is about … Really, it is about the interpretation you bring to it, not the interpretation I give it. See what you think.

There is an edited Summary after the video …

SUMMARY OF THE VIDEO

Hello, Dear Ones, It’s Alice.

I have another poem for you, from years ago. It is called “Deliverance.” I wrote this poem on Santa Monica Beach. It was close to sunset, and I was watching a sailboat, far off on the horizon, going off towards the setting sun. Here is the poem …

Deliverance
A Poem by Alice B. Clagett
Soundtrack and Words
June 2003

On a grey day by a grey sea
As the tide flees this steady shore,

Two children —
altogether mindless of Monday
and the grim anguish of their parents,
Greet white-capped waves with ecstasy

And far away, a three-sailed bark,
Poised on the edge of sky and sea
Slips silent into mystery.

Who stands before the mast?
Is it the shadow of the man?
Or does this brim-full heart,
holding his hand,
Chart a sure course by some forgotten star
To bring him home again?
