SKIT: WHALER STATION WATCHMAN
by Alice B. Clagett
27 February 2023

I can imagine one lone whaler watchman wintering the long Arctic night at a whaling station up there in Greenland. The inlet is jammed with ice. There will be no help from the sea. Winds are whipping wildly about; a pilot would have to be crazy to try to land a small craft there.

Everything depends on the keeping the electric generator going. Without that he is bound to freeze to death. This is going to be one long winter. Right shortly after station slowdown the hooch ran out. He has a great chance to search his Soul, journal, and re-invent himself.

This watchman’s only contact with his mates is his short wave radio. Then yesterday’s polar cap absorption event occurs! The short wave sizzles out. Protons traveling at near the speed of Light wreak havoc on his generator.

It’s lights out in the whaling station. Disoriented, the lonely man looks out the one tiny window in his watch station. There the Northern Lights … so bright it seems like noon in Amsterdam … play football with his Soul.

Rose red, iridescent green, then blue … nearly blinding … astoundingly austere … infinitely alluring … these comely darts cajole his heart to woo a happy ending.
