SONG BY THE PACIFIC
A Poem by Alice B. Clagett
December 2001

I would but be
. . . . this endless ocean:
. . . . tireless, to beseech the sandy shore

But no! I am this rocky beach,
. . . . and the vast ocean dissolves me;
. . . . slowly, so slowly, seeming not to be, I am
. . . . . . . . o’ertaken by that liquid state

And no! I am that line upon the sea
. . . . where water just now meets a fiery sunset…
. . . . . . . . not rock
. . . . . . . . nor sea
. . . . . . . . nor air
. . . . . . . . nor even light

. . . . but the thin, fine line
. . . . that mitres each to each
